Picking up Property
ANY Property is released by appointment ONLY. To schedule an appointment, Please fill out the RELEASE OF PROPERTY FORM or call 570-421-6800 during normal business hours. You must provide your name, a case number or a serial number and/or a description of the property you would like to pick up. *You must bring a valid state-issued photo ID or Driver License to your appointment.
If you were arrested by SARPD, and an Officer booked your property for safekeeping because the jail would not accept it, that property will be held for 90 days and if not pick up will be disposed of.
Evidence Releases
The Evidence Custodian does not release property held as evidence without written authorization from the Officer, Detective, District Attorney or Judge handling the case. This may be the investigator, the District Attorney’s Office, another law enforcement agency or the court. To inquire about the case status please contact the investigating Officer or Detective handling your case. Please provide your name and case number.
Picking Up Property for Another Person/Non-Owner Claims
If you are picking up the property for someone else, you will need a Power of Attorney (POA) or a Notarized Statement from the person who owns the property authorizing you to claim the item(s) on your behalf. The document must indicate the name of the person picking up the property as well as an inventory of items they are authorized to claim. The person picking up your property must make an appointment with the Evidence custodian, and bring a valid government issued photo ID along with the POA, Notarized Statement or other legal documents authorizing such.
Found Property
Any item turned into Evidence as found property is held for at least 90 days to attempt to identify an owner. If the item has not been claimed after 90 days, it will be disposed of according to Pennsylvania Law/ Department Policies.
Lost Items
If you would like to find out if a lost item has been turned in, call 570-421-6800. You must provide your name, date of birth, phone number, description of the item(s), and the location where the item(s) may have been lost.
Firearms
Firearms cannot be released until a background check through Pennsylvania Instant Check System (PICS) has been completed. PICS requires possession of a valid Pennsylvania ID or driver's license. The Evidence Custodian will coordinate an appointment to pick up your firearm(s) in coordination with the PICS approval.
If you are denied possession of a firearm by PICS, you may appeal the denial with PICS.
Firearms are ONLY returned to the registered owner. Proof of purchase may be required.
Inmate property
If you were booked into the Monroe County Correction Facility with your property, your property will be released by the corrections officer at the time you are released, please contact, the Monroe County Correctional Facility for further information at 570-992-3232.
Vehicle Impounds
All vehicles released are by appointment ONLY. To schedule an appointment, fill out the Release of Property Form OR call 570-421-6800 ext 1081 during normal business hours. You must provide your name, a case number, and a description of the vehicle you would like to pick up. IMPORTANT: Tow and/or storage fees must be paid in advance prior to the vehicle being picked up. Vehicles are only released to registered vehicle owners.
If your vehicle has been impounded and stored within our secured facility. In cases of Search Warrants, the investigating officer will contact you to tell you when the vehicle will be released. You may contact Evidence Custodian Harold Bentzoni at 570-421-6800 x 1081 to arrange a pickup time for your vehicle. Vehicles not picked up (or pick up arrangements made) within 24 hours will be towed back to the originating tow companies facility.
If your vehicle is being held as evidence in a criminal case, written authorization must be provided from the investigating officer, the District Attorney’s Office, or another law enforcement agency who is handling the case. To inquire about the case status please contact the investigating Officer.
